Have you ever heard of patio pavers before? Don’t worry about it, you’re not alone. It is a common question for homeowners to ask when considering an outdoor renovation for the first time. Pavers have been around for thousands of years, designed to provide a comfortable surface for people to walk around and define the spaces where people can gather. They can be made from a variety of materials, but stone and concrete tend to be the most popular choice. Stone pavers can be made of different types of stones, such as travertine, limestone, marble, and granite.
Other types include clay and brick, which are good for the rustic look of the country. Shapes are different as well. Pavers tend to form interlocking patterns so that they can be easily and quickly installed without too much custom fitting. The variety of materials, color choices, and shapes means that there is an endless variety of designs to be created. The patio floors are a great way to add a personal touch to your backyard or patio. Installation is simple but labor-intensive, which means that anyone can tackle a project as long as they don’t mind rolling up their sleeves and doing the work they need.
Patio pavers is a collective term used to refer to any type of pavement, such as concrete patio pavers, used in the construction of an outdoor patio deck. These materials add vibrancy and elegance to the patios, making them more inviting and relaxing.
In general, patio floors are classified into three main categories, based on the type of raw material used to produce them. Concrete patio floors fall under the category of concrete floors. As the name suggests, these are concrete pavers. Collectively, brick pavers refer to pavers made of clay, while stone pavers refer to pavers made of natural stones such as granite and sandstone. These floorings are available in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes to suit any design concept or to convey a particular mood.
Three main materials for Patio Pavers
Generally speaking, there are three main types of raw materials used for the production of regular pavement products, all of which can be used as patio floors:
- Concrete pavers: made of concrete – can be used as patio pavers.
- Brick pavers: made of clay – can be used as patio pavers.
- Stone pavers: made of natural stone – such as granite, sandstone, etc. can be used as patio pavers.
Each of the above paver groups has a multitude of paver products that are produced in an endless selection of colors, shapes, patterns, and sizes that would be suited for patio paver applications. Therefore, just about any type of paver can be used to build a patio. In essence, any regular paver product can be used to make a patio and, as such, is described as a ‘patio paver.’
Patterns and Design
When it comes to installing your chosen patio pavers, there are a variety of patterns and designs to consider.
Herringbone
This is the most formal of the patterns available and the most popular, it is a zigzag type of design and is ideal for the cover-up of irregular areas.
Running Bond
This is a simple yet versatile pattern type. It is also very popular for use in patios and small areas. Pavers are laid at an angle to create a curve pattern.
Basket-Weave
The Basket-Weave pattern is suitable for casual applications. This pattern is often used with another type of design, or it can be used alone. Pavers are laid vertically and horizontally in pairs.
Circle Design
This is a popular and sometimes difficult design to install, where pavers are laid in a circle design, creating the curves can be challenging.
Fan Design
This design brings a pattern of gentle arches and is generally applied to walkways and driveways also.
Random Design
This design involves the use of about four different sizes of patio pavers for one application, creating a bold effect. It is also used for walkways and driveways.
Mixed Design
This design involves the use of about three to four different shaped pavers, often used for borders, the Circle design, and the Fan design.
