What Are The Best Pavers To Use For A Patio?

Table of Contents

Whether you’re having a backyard barbecue, enjoying a sunrise, or playing a scorer for your kids’ soccer games, the patio is a rejuvenating part of your property. Unless your children ruin it, of course. Like this picture of a kid who got hold of some baby oil and let loose on a new concrete paved patio. If you’re considering putting yourself on a paver patio, you’re going to want to understand which materials are good for you and why. Check out the Top 10 Paver Patios materials:

1. Brick Pavers

Brick patio pavers work well with many different types of houses due to their uniform shape. Bricks come in a variety of styles and qualities, such as eco-bricks. Thinking about the outdoor firepit? Keep in mind that installing paver patios and fire pits will take some planning and effort.

Price to install: $8-$10 per square foot.

2. Stamped Concrete

If you love the idea of different stones and the versatility of concrete, you’ll want to consider stamped concrete pavements for your patio. Your professional landscaper can make it look like natural stone, gravel, brick, or just about anything you can think of.

Price to install: $11-$13 per square foot.

3. Concrete Pavers

Concrete patio pavers are a favorite among homeowners because they are available in a wide variety of colors, sizes, textures, finishes, and maneuverability. If you’re not willing to hire a professional landscaper, you might want to check out this DIY video from Ron Hazelton.

Price to install: $6-$10 per square foot.

4. Slate

If you love the look of natural stone, but you can’t afford the high price of flagstone, you might consider slate patio pavers. While the installation process and the general appeal are similar to the flagstone process, the price is much lower. Slate usually comes in square or rectangular tiles.

Price to install: $16-$20 per square foot.

5. Pea Gravel

While not technically a patio flooring material, pea gravel can be integrated into concrete pavements or simply left as a patio flooring material on its own. Pea Gravil is a flexible, versatile option that can be great for patios that tend to collect water.

Price to install: $.25-$1 a square foot.

6. Flagstone

If you’re looking for an interesting, varied pattern; consider flagstone pavers. Once sealed, it’s cool underfoot, and it really has a distinguished appearance. Talk to your landscaper about the options available; flagstone patio floors can be laid on sand or adhered to mortar.

Price to install: $16-$20 per square foot.

7. Wood

There are several options for those who enjoy the look of wood between regular wood and wood alternatives. You’ll need to keep your climate and the location of the patio in mind, as patios that get very wet (and stay that way) may not do well with wood or wood-based material. Still, it’s a good material to keep in mind if you enjoy a rustic appearance in your outdoor living area.

8. Decomposed Granite

Granite is a natural stone that is often used as a kitchen countertop material. It also makes a great patio material when it decomposes. It can be used as a mulch or mixed with resin to make a sturdy, non-eroding patio cover. Find out more about how to use decomposed granite in your landscaping or hardscaping plan.

Price to install: $4-$6 per square foot.

9. Rubber Tiles

Rubber tiles have some good advantages for the new DIY’er.

  • They’re cheap.
  • The tiles are snapping together, no difficult instructions are needed.
  • They’re coming in a few finishes, and they can fit your ideas.
  • They’re fairly new material to be innovative!

Price to install: $2-$7 per square foot. (It depends on the quality)

10. Recycled Materials

If you’re proud to be green or to be a King or Queen of Rescue, you might be interested in saving materials to be used as your own recycled patio pavers. You could scavenge old concrete, brick, or natural stone from construction or demolition sites, or just ask people who you know are putting new hardscapes in their own yards. This might make a great DIY project, and the appearance is bound to be one-of-a-kind. Make sure your paver patio is properly sealed.
