What Materials Are Used For Driveway Pavers?

Table of Contents

Some new homeowners who bought a suburban or rural house did so mainly out of love for gardening. Apartment living simply did not provide enough space for them to grow plants. People like this may not take a lot of interest in hardscape. They want a natural-looking yard, and landscaping features like patios and decks do not fascinate them. There is probably only one example of hardscape in the yards of homeowners of this kind, assuming that they own a car: a driveway.

If you have just been described in the above paragraph, try to suppress that yawn for a few moments as you read this article. It is important to pick up or not a driveway material that is suited to your goals and needs. You can save a lot of trouble later by selecting a type of surface that is compatible with your situation right from the start. This article will expand on that point as we move forward. Below are materials that can be used for driveway pavers.

1. Gravel

Gravel driveways are very popular across the U.S. Although initial installation costs for gravel are low, ongoing maintenance requirements are considerable and are not the best choice for snowy regions. Quick to install, the material comes in different colors, allowing a customized look to complement your specific house style.

2. Concrete

Concrete driveways are versatile, durable, low-maintenance, and cost-effective in the long term, making it another popular option, but one that is suitable for any part of the country. The design of a concrete drive can be simple and traditional (as shown) or elaborated with color, texture, and decorative flora.

3. Pavers

A paver driveway can be a great boost to curb appeal; a wide range of design options are readily available. Although it is more expensive to install than some other materials, a paver driveway carries relatively low long-term maintenance costs and can last 30 to 40 years.

4. Shell

A natural crushed shell driveway can be very beautiful and is usually quite cost-effective. Coming in three main varieties — clam, oyster, and scallop — these drives range in color, from white to gray to brown. As long as the shells are produced responsibly, this type of driveway, which provides excellent drainage, is an eco-friendly choice.

5. Asphalt

Asphalt driveways are a popular option in northern U.S. climates, as the material is foldable and the weather freezes better than concrete or pavements. The black color of asphalt also retains heat, which helps to melt snow relatively quickly. One drawback is that regular maintenance is required; sealing is recommended every three to five years.

6. Pervious Concrete

Pervious concrete, which has little to no sand in its mixture, allows water to run through its porous surface, eliminating run-off issues commonly associated with asphalt and concrete driveways. With a rustic, textured look and feel, environmentally friendly, pervious concrete driveways can be surprisingly attractive.

7. Basalt Paver Tiles

Basalt is an igneous rock that makes up most of the oceanic crust of the earth. Hard, dense, and durable, it’s a gorgeous natural stone paver in the patios, walkways, and driveways. A resilient and naturally beautiful basalte’s rectilinear geometry and a gray-to-black color palette make it an appropriate visual complement to modern architecture.

8. Grass

In the field of grass driveway technology, ‘geo-grid’ materials provide the necessary support structure for cars while protecting the root zone of the soil and allowing grass to grow even in this high-traffic area. Of course, grass is permeable, and it’s pretty cool to look at as a driveway material.

9. Brick

Rich colors and varied patterns make the brick driveway a truly elegant choice. Although they are expensive to install, they can have a large, positive impact on the value of home resale. If properly installed, the maintenance costs are modest and the material should last a lifetime.
